ABOUT THIS EPISODE.
In the world of filmmaking, audio often plays a role that is as critical as the visuals. It’s a lesson that Natalie McFarland of McFarland Productions knows well, and one that industry expert Tim Kimsey of Audio Knuckle Busters has dedicated his life to perfecting. In a recent episode of McFarland Minutes, Natalie and Tim engage in a deep conversation exploring the essential nature of sound in production, the nuances of collaboration, and the balance between professional ambitions and personal life.
Natalie opens the discussion by noting the central role that sound plays in storytelling. “A film without effective sound design,” she says, “might as well just throw it in the trash.” The conversation quickly reveals the complexity of achieving high-quality audio, from the ambient sounds captured in remote locations to the precise mixing required for emotional impact. Tim shares insights from his extensive career, emphasizing the importance of sound to the overall narrative of a film. Whether it’s creating a library of sound effects or capturing ambient audio, the goal is always to enhance the visual story on screen.
Tim’s path to becoming an audio engineering legend began at the tender age of 19, and throughout the podcast, he shares anecdotes that speak to his persistence and passion. From working as a “gopher” at a recording studio to collaborating with industry giants like Vanilla Ice and Pantera, Tim’s career highlights the significance of determination and seizing opportunities. He conveys how working with producers in diverse markets, like the Hispanic music scene, expanded his scope and led him to travel the world.
One key theme in this conversation is the critical nature of teamwork in production. Whether it’s Tim and his partner Robert Bogart running Audio Knuckle Busters or Natalie assembling a crew for a complex multi-state project, the podcast underscores the virtues of relying on a great team. Both Tim and Natalie celebrate their collaborative relationship, acknowledging that having a skilled and dependable team is crucial to the success of any project.
The dialogue also ventures into a more personal territory. Tim candidly discusses the life lessons he has learned from his career, emphasizing the importance of maintaining balance. As someone who has poured heart and soul into his work, he advises up-and-coming professionals to keep “one foot in, one foot out,” reminding us that the job can never love you back the way your family and life can. Both Nathalie and Tim reflect on the importance of remembering the “whole point”—to live a full, balanced life that’s enriched by, but not consumed by, work.
Tim and Natalie’s conversation is rich with wisdom for anyone eager to delve into or understand the world of audio production. From detailed career highlights and the pressures of live production to candid advice on work-life balance, the episode offers a comprehensive look at the craft of sound engineering. For young professionals, it’s a reminder to focus on what truly matters while striving for excellence in every project.

NATALIE MCFARLAND

PRESIDENT, FOUNDER
MCFARLAND PRODUCTIONS
After freelancing her way through college, Natalie established McFarland Productions in 2014, which has continued to grow rapidly over the last few years. Her passion and focus have always remained the same; capturing, understanding, preserving and promoting Ranching, Farming, Western Lifestyle and AgriBusiness. She has always had a love for the western culture and even at a young age it was unmistakably clear she would someday find a career serving the industry.
Natalie grew up on a small ranch, rodeoed, showed horses in a variety of disciplines, showed livestock, and participated in 4H and Oregon High School Equestrian Teams. She has trained herding dogs and started colts, worked with sheep and cattle and has had the experience of racing to finish up a hayfield before a rainstorm hit. She understands the joys, sorrows, wins, losses and hard work of ranchers and farmers. That’s why McFarland Productions can produce authentic marketing campaigns for the businesses, organizations, events, and brands of the western and agriculture industry – it’s who she is.
With a passion for building community surrounding brands, Natalie focuses on building real connections between companies/brands and the people that make up their community. Telling the stories of your customers and making them apart of the brand’s story is her main focus. Creating real, human, meaningful connections and strengthening community within the western and agriculture industry through strategic marketing services.
SCOUT FOSTER

DIRECTOR OF STRATEGIC STORYTELLING
MCFARLAND PRODUCTIONS
Scout’s faithfulness to the agriculture and western sports industry is rooted in tradition. Growing up in Central Florida, she stood by her family as they supported different sectors of the industry, including raising beef cattle, bucking bulls for local rodeos, and spending weekends with her grandparents who lived on Disney’s Wilderness Preserve.
Moving away from The Mouse, Scout graduated Magna Cum Laude from the Nation’s top agricultural communications college at Texas Tech University in 2022.
Now residing in Crockett, she and her husband, Lane, keep busy raising beef cattle and bucking bulls with her family. Scout also loves gardening, raising chickens, reading, and her two dogs: Rue and Dill.
