What 11 Books Taught Me About Business, Marketing, and Playing the Long Game

At the beginning of the year, I set out to read books that would help me become better at marketing, business, leadership, and life.

I didn’t realize I’d end up finding the same lesson over and over again.

Looking back at my reading list so far, the titles cover a wide range of topics. From sales psychology and wealth creation to branding and personal development, the authors approach success from different angles. Yet many of them arrive at the same conclusion:

The things that matter most are usually built slowly.

My 2026 reading list so far:

  • The Go-Giver by Bob Burg and John Mann
  • Building a StoryBrand 2.0 by Donald Miller
  • Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill
  • Influence by Robert Cialdini
  • The Millionaire Fastlane by MJ DeMarco
  • The Psychology of Money by Morgan Housel
  • $100M Offers by Alex Hormozi
  • The Slight Edge by Jeff Olson
  • The Mountain Is You by Brianna Wiest
  • Outwitting the Devil by Napoleon Hill
  • The Almanack of Naval Ravikant by Eric Jorgenson

While each book focused on something different, three themes appeared again and again.

Success Is Usually Less Complicated Than We Want It to Be

One of the strongest lessons came from The Slight Edge. Jeff Olson argues that success is often the result of small actions repeated consistently over time rather than dramatic breakthroughs.

That idea showed up repeatedly throughout the year.

Morgan Housel’s The Psychology of Money emphasizes how wealth is often created through patience and consistency rather than perfect investing. Naval Ravikant discusses the power of long-term thinking and compound growth. Even Donald Miller’s StoryBrand framework is built around the idea that clarity, not complexity, wins.

In a world obsessed with shortcuts, many of these books pointed back to the same truth: consistency compounds.

Relationships Matter More Than Transactions

If there was one book that challenged the way I think about business, it was The Go-Giver.

The premise is simple. The most successful people focus on creating value for others before focusing on what they can get in return.

That lesson connects naturally with Influence, which explores why people make decisions and how trust is built. It also aligns with StoryBrand’s focus on understanding the customer before talking about yourself.

As someone who works in marketing, this theme stood out. The strongest brands aren’t constantly asking people to buy something. They spend time building trust, creating community, and helping people solve problems.

The sale becomes a result of the relationship rather than the starting point.

Mindset Shapes Outcomes

Several books on the list focused less on tactics and more on the internal work required to grow.

Think and Grow Rich, Outwitting the Devil, and The Mountain Is You all explore the role mindset plays in success. While each approaches the topic differently, they share a common belief that personal growth often requires confronting limiting beliefs, fears, and habits that hold us back.

Growth rarely happens by accident.

It requires awareness, discipline, and a willingness to challenge the stories we tell ourselves.

My Biggest Takeaway

If I had to summarize all eleven books in a single sentence, it would be this:

Build value consistently and trust the process long enough to see the results.

Whether the topic was money, marketing, business, relationships, or personal growth, the lesson remained surprisingly similar. The people who succeed over the long term are rarely chasing the next shortcut. They’re showing up consistently, creating value, building trust, and allowing time to work in their favor.

That may not be the most exciting answer.

But after eleven books, it might be the most valuable one.

I’d love to hear what you’ve been reading this year and what lessons have stuck with you along the way.
