Judy Wagner

The inspiration behind Nice Job, Cowgirl

"Never underestimate the power of planting a seed."

Judy Wagner grew up in Avon, a small ranching community in western Montana. As the eldest of her seven siblings, Judy learned leadership, responsibility, and work ethic as a child — marking the start of her “Ranch Grown Logic.” Judy retired from Montana Silversmiths in 2024 as their Chief Marketing Officer. Previously, she was the founder of the known brand Gator Ropes and a 4H extension agent. Judy is a rodeo competitor, ranch cowgirl, an entrepreneur with iconic and trailblazing concepts, and above all, always a mentor.

With the power of planting a seed, Judy seeks to inspire and empower leaders of the Western industry to dream more, do more, and become more.

A seed, when nourished, grows into a strong tree. Similarly, a spark of inspiration and encouragement fostered by leaders can lead to a transformative movement within the Western industry. By planting the seed, Judy promotes a culture of remarkable leadership, ambition, and empowerment, helping to shape the future of the Western industry.

What they're saying.

"This captivating film chronicles the life of Judy Wagner, a true Western icon whose "Ranch Grown Logic" has established her as a trailblazer and mentor in the Western industry."
"One of my favorite human beings in the whole world. Nice Job, Cowgirl!"
"I just watched Nice job. Cowgirl. And Natalie McFarland did an outstanding job. And Judy Wagner and I have been friends for a long time, and I knew she'd nail it. The movie was great. She was great. I would watch it again and again."
"I thought it was great. I mean, it's such a testament to the person Judy is. And I think everyone has a pretty common experience with her that she's so welcoming, just forthcoming with advice. And I think, everyone got emotional. She's is such a powerful speaker. It was really neat to see that and have that honor of being in the room and watch her get the honor that she deserves. "
"Front row ticket please"
Carl Culham
"I thought the film was great. I've known Judy for a while through Miss Rodeo America, I was Miss Rodeo Wyoming, and then, now I work for Miss Rodeo America, so we have a close connection with her. It was an emotional film for me because she's left those comments [Nice Job, Cowgirl] on my posts before and just kind of learning her story in the background behind it."
Morgan Wallace
"Thank you for inspiring us yesterday, today and tomorrow."
Matlynn Sunvision
"My initial reaction to the movie. Honestly, I love Judy for what she does for this community and what she does for industry. I honestly didn't know a lot about her backstory, and it's so neat to see. She's influenced so many people throughout her entire life and career. It's such an influential moment to think about for every woman, and man, but especially women, about how we can also do the same. Reflect on, you know, and, especially for the young women who have decades of experience ahead, figuring out just how we want to impact this industry and the people around us. And you can see Judy's legacy stretches so far beyond herself. And that's such an inspiring thing for everybody to watch."
Andrea Thorp
"Judy Wagner is a true gift to anyone who get to share a moment in her light."
Mindy Hoggan
"I thought it was beautiful. Honestly, it just it was almost emotional. I wanted to just cry. I feel like she carries a true cowgirl spirit. And for somebody that maybe doesn't really consider herself like a traditional cowgirl. It's just so warm and embracing to hear her perspective and to hear what she has to say. It just makes you feel so welcome and warm. And what an amazing thing that she's done for her industry. So it was it was special to watch. And and I had tears in my eyes multiple times."
"It was incredible. You know, Judy Wagner is an icon, and you just see that story and how you together and all of the lives that she's touched, it was really amazing. And then to have that song at the end was something totally unexpected, but was truly the way to end it, because it's just a song in everyone's heart."

I’m excited to share a glimpse into a journey that began on Nov 30th, 2023, when I received a call that would lead us all here today. We were on the road, driving from Montana to Vegas hauling the Montana Silversmiths trailer to NFR (as I enlist my husband as slave labor to drive each year) we were nearly through St. George, Utah when our Montana Silversmiths videographer and dear friend Natalie McFarland, reached out to me with an incredible idea, one so crazy that it just might work.

At first, I didn’t know what to expect…”we should make a movie about Judy’s life and start filming it at the NFR!” (which was starting in 2 days, mind you) A project focusing on her influence of the western industry…a story of a strong, resilient cowgirl who embodied both grace and grit navigating thru the western world as a businesswoman, leader and mentor. As Natalie explained the vision, I could feel my excitement growing. We should do this. We CAN do this. This film was more than just a story; it was a tribute to all those who work tirelessly, often behind the scenes, to keep our western traditions and values alive for future generations. Capturing Judy’s dreams, struggles, triumphs, while weaving in themes of empowerment, community, and resilience.
I remember feeling a rush of inspiration, then realization… “ummmm, we probably should talk to Judy about this” So, we did that day on a video call, and it was met with “what?! no, that’s crazy talk, why me, no, wait, are you sure, ok, maybe, but who is going to care?! definitely no, then, finally a YES!! through laughter, tears and virtual hugs.
The project was ambitious…to begin executing in less than 48 hours, but that’s what made it thrilling. We envisioned a film that would not only entertain but also inspire—a call to action for future generations to embrace their passions, break boundaries and blaze trails as prolific leaders, like our Judy.
As we began to outline the next steps with Montana Silversmiths and McFarland Productions, I felt a deep sense of responsibility. This wasn’t just a film about Judy being a cowgirl, this was about the most significant mentor of my life for the last 18 years…how could we ever do her justice?!
To express that her leadership is not just about strategies and goals; it’s about people. Listening to her team members, understanding their concerns, and recognizing their contributions over time building trust and loyalty. We know that when people feel valued, they are more likely to go above and beyond, and by God, we were going to pour our hearts and souls into this endeavor together.
Looking back, that call last year marked the beginning of a beautiful collaboration. “Nice Job, Cowgirl” is not just a short film about J Dub, it’s a movement to honor and elevate the voices of everyday heroes (not all wear capes), some wear cowboy hats… Her ranch grown logic sense of leadership is a multifaceted journey that requires vision, empathy, resilience, and collaboration. As we step into our roles as leaders—whether in our careers, communities, or everyday lives—let us strive to embody these qualities. Let us inspire others, foster a sense of belonging, and lead with integrity. May we all become the leaders our world needs.
As we celebrate today, let us remember the importance of storytelling, and the legacy of those who dare to dream. Judy’s journey reminds us that with passion, perseverance, and a commitment to individuality, not perfection, that we can all make a lasting impact by planting a seed. The faith of a mustard seed, as Judy might say.
A seed is both simple and profound: the idea of blooming where you are planted. This concept, rooted in resilience and growth. She has reminded me many times, that the power to thrive is within me. In fact, Judy’s frequent counsel to me “what does your gut tell you” has never lead me astray.
Even when it’s easy to feel discouraged, when the seeds are not in a neat little row or when the soil around seems rocky. However, true growth occurs not in the absence of adversity, but in how we respond to it. Seeds cannot grow without proper care and feeding, to say, nurturing of potential. Judy has invested her time and energy into me personally and my professional development. Her masterful talent has been encouraging me to seek out new skills, build relationships, cultivate my passions, and find ways to grow. The key is to take initiative and not wait for the perfect conditions. Growth often occurs in the most unlikely places.
Just as plants thrive in healthy ecosystems, we too flourish when we surround ourselves with supportive individuals like Judy. Let’s uplift one another, share our experiences, and celebrate our successes, no matter how small. Together, we can create an environment where everyone has the chance to bloom. By remaining adaptable and open-minded, we can navigate these changes and emerge stronger.
Blooming where you are planted is a powerful reminder that we have the ability to thrive, no matter our circumstances. It calls us to embrace our environment, shift our perspective, nurture our potential, build supportive communities, and welcome change.
Let’s make the most of our unique journeys and inspire those around us to do the same. Together, we can create a garden of growth, resilience, and beauty. Never underestimate the power of planting a seed.”

THE MAKING OF

EPISODE 1

A Behind the Scenes with the Director and Director or Story

In 2018, McFarland Productions began working with Montana Silversmiths as a contractor. Over the last six years, the McFarland Productions team and Judy Wagner have built a highly regarded working relationship and personal friendship. Judy has been an inspiration and role model to many, and her mentorship and friendship with the McFarland Productions team is no different. In 2020, a sub-brand of McFarland Productions, Off Your Rocker Films, was created when the opportunity to produce long-format films was presented, keeping the parent company’s mission at its core: Creating connections between the brands and organizations of the western and agriculture industries and their communities.

When Judy Wagner announced her retirement as Chief Marketing Officer of Montana Silversmiths, we were inspired to tell the story of an exemplary leader for our industry and how her “planting a seed” has had a profound impact that reaches all corners of the Western lifestyle. Leadership, influence, friendship, and belief in each other are at the core of why, in association with Montana Silversmiths, we produced Nice Job, Cowgirl: The Judy Wagner Story.

To the right, you can click to watch our discussion between Director Natalie McFarland and Director of Story Scout Foster as they chat about the why behind the film, the personal relationship with Judy, and exceptional moments of clarity when creating the film.
